DO

  • Pump your tank every 3–5 years.

  • Limit your water use & repair leaks.

  • Keep roof and yard water away from the drain field.

  • Use liquid laundry detergent.

  • Use septic-safe toilet paper.

  • Keep records of septic pumping and inspections.

  • Know where your tank and drain field are located.

  • Install risers for easy tank access.

  • Keep cars, trucks, and equipment off the drain field.

  • Only allow grass to grow over the drain field.

  • Check and clean the effluent filter once a year.

  • Call a pro right away if you notice strong odors or soggy spots.

Don't

  • Don’t skip regular maintenance.​

  • Don’t ignore foul odors, wet spots, or backups.

  • Don’t allow harsh chemicals down your drain.

  • Don’t flush wipes (even ”flushable”).

  • Don’t flush paper towels, tissues or diapers.

  • Don’t pour grease, oil, or fat down drains.

  • Don’t drive or build over the tank.

  • Don’t plant trees or shrubs near the drain field.

  • Don’t let animals roam or graze over the drain field.

  • Don’t dump coffee grounds orfood scraps down the drain.

  • Don’t rely on a garbage disposal.

  • Don’t dump salts down the drain.
